Marine Corps Air Station Implements Energy Conservation Partnership To Dramatically Enhance Base Operations
THE OPPORTUNITY
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, “Home of Second Marine Aircraft Wing” needed a strategy to reduce energy and operation costs while increasing control over the air wing’s support facilities energy use…….and the leadership needed these solutions without impacting existing budgets or effecting air station operations.
THE RESULTS
Energy Systems Group designed a multistage strategy and process to implement a leading edge solution leveraging technology and information to dramatically improve the energy security for the entire air station. In coordination with the wing’s operation needs, ESG applied their design to meet the energy efficiency strategy and included the installation of Ground Coupled Heat Pumps (GCHP) systems for family housing units, improvements to the energy and water system for approximately two million square feet of support facilities, upgrades to steam source cleaning systems, enhanced metering to help control station water consumption and integration of existing equipment controls in a customized energy management system. This $18+ million partnership benefits Cherry Point through:
- Financing Package That Pays For The Project Using Energy Cost Savings
- Increased Energy Efficiency and Indoor Air Quality For All Housing
- Reduced Energy and Operation Costs to Fund the Existing Mission
- Improved Energy Security and Self-Sufficiency For Operations
- Increased Control of Energy Consumption and Load Management Through Integration of Existing Equipment Controls
