Carl Sandburg College is dedicated to enhancing its campus buildings and maximizing resources by being green and implementing renewable and sustainable energy solutions. 

 

On this front, Carl Sandburg College has partnered with Energy Systems Group (ESG), a leading energy services provider, to implement energy conservation measures and building improvements, including a comprehensive replacement of all air conditioning units in Galesburg and Carthage campus buildings and a geothermal energy system in Building A.

Geothermal Systems

What is a geothermal system?

Geothermal systems work in a very unique way to naturally provide an efficient renewable energy source to a building. They utilize the thermal energy within the earth to heat or cool buildings.

 

How will it work?

Geothermal energy is either transferred to the building or utilized to absorb heat from the building. The energy is transferred through a network of heat pumps located throughout the facility. The heat pumps are connected to the earth by a series of wells adjacent to the building. The following graphics depict the system operation in both the summer cooling mode and the winter heating mode. 

 

How will these construction improvements affect students and staff?

These building and energy infrastructure improvements will enhance the work and learning environment at Carl Sandburg College while reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our sustainability initiatives.

By implementing these key energy conservation and renewable energy measures, Carl Sandburg College will save $56,107 in total energy and operational costs, 290,108 kWh in electric energy and 50,070 Therms in natural gas, over the term of the contract with Energy Systems Group. Carl Sandburg College will reduce its carbon footprint by 483 metric tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to any one of the following:

Generating enough electricity to power 72 homes
Planting 152 acres of forest
