Frederick-Winchester Service Authority
Green Energy Facility
Waste from food processors, dairies, and meat processors is delivered and prepared for the digestion.
Sludge from residences and business are sent to the treatment plant through the community’s sewer system.
In large tanks, the sludge and food waste are anaerobically digested with millions of microorganisms. Methane gas is created through this digestion process.
Gas Storage Bubble
The methane gas is collected from the digesters and stored in a large bubble for later use, such as for heating the digester or for electrical generation.
Moisture and contaminants are removed from the methane gas.
The methane gas is used as fuel in the generator, producing electricity on-site.
The electricity generated is either used to operate the treatment plant or exported to the electric grid for sale to another party.
