What is Energy Performance Contracting?

Energy Performance Contracting is a turnkey service sometimes compared to design/build construction contracting which provides customers with a comprehensive set of energy efficiency, renewable energy and distributed generation measures and often is accompanied with guarantees that the savings produced by a project will be sufficient to finance the full cost of the project. A typical Energy Performance Contracting project is delivered by an Energy Service Company (ESCO) and consists of the following elements:

  • Turnkey Service – The ESCO provides all of the services required to design and implement a comprehensive project at the customer facility, from the initial energy audit through long-term Measurement and Verification (M&V) of project savings.
  • Energy Conservation Measures – The ESCO tailors a comprehensive set of measures to fit the needs of a particular facility, and can include energy efficiency, renewable energy, distributed generation, water conservation and sustainable materials and operations.
  • Project financing – The ESCO arranges for long-term project financing that is provided by
    a third-party financing company. Financing is typically in the form of an operating lease or municipal lease.
  • Energy Savings Guarantee – The ESCO provides a guarantee that the savings produced by the project will be sufficient to cover the cost of project financing for the life of the project.

What is landfill gas? As solid waste in landfills decomposes, landfill gas is released. Landfill gas consists of approximately 50% methane, 42% carbon dioxide, 7% nitrogen and 1% oxygen compounds. Landfill gas is a readily available, local and renewable energy source that offsets the need for non-renewable resources such as oil, coal and gas.

ESG's Landfill Gas Development team is comprised of highly skilled professionals who can evaluate your needs, design a project that will maintain environmental compliance and provide you with a new source of revenue.

The ESG team brings over 40 years and 20+ projects of experience to you. Our team is highly experienced in developing direct use projects, electric generation, pipeline quality gas from landfills and all leading technologies utilized in the landfill gas industry.

Landfill Gas Usage:

Landfill gas projects generate revenue from the sale of the gas and also create green jobs associated with the design, construction, and operation of energy systems. Once converted, landfill gas can be utilized in many ways: to generate electricity, heat, or steam; as an alternative vehicle fuel; or sold on the energy market as a renewable "green" power or gas.

  • Electricity is the most widely used of the landfill gas projects. The electricity can be used for internal facilities or sold to external consumers.
  • Direct-Use is used to replace non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
  • Cogeneration produces both electricity and thermal energy. This normally relates to steam or hot water and is very efficient.
  • Pipeline Gas is a high Btu application. Landfill methane is processed to meet interstate pipeline standards and is injected into the delivery system. High value Btu systems generate premium value for landfills.

Combined Heat and Power/Cogeneration

Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from a single fuel source, such as: natural gas, biomass, biogas, coal, waste heat, or oil. Cogeneration is not a single technology, but an integrated energy system that can be modified depending upon the needs of the energy end user.

CHP provides:

  • Onsite generation of electrical and/or mechanical power
  • Waste-heat recovery for heating, cooling, dehumidification, or process applications
  • Seamless system integration for a variety of technologies, thermal applications, and fuel types into existing building infrastructure
  • The two most common Combined heat and power system configurations are: Gas turbine or engine with heat recovery unit and Steam boiler with steam turbine

ESG helps customers generate heat or electrical power to operate their plants, sending the surplus electrical power back into the power grid or sharing excess heat via a distributed heating grid.



Decentralizing central heat plants can help reduce energy costs by eliminating distribution pipe heat losses and inefficient heat exchangers, and enhancing plant security, resiliency, and infrastructure capabilities.
