U.S. Forest Service
USFS Region 2 & Region 4
Project Background
Energy Systems Group (ESG) has developed
and implemented a comprehensive
renewable energy and energy conservation
project for the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. ESG
provided renewable energy sources and
energy efficiency improvements to the
Forest Service Regions 2 & 4 that included
some of the following national forests:
• Ashley National Forest
• Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests
and Pawnee National Grasslands
• Bighorn National Forest
• Black Hills National Forest
• Caribou-Targhee National Forest
• Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison
National Forests
• Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests
and Thunder Basin National Grasslands
• Pike/San Isabel National Forest and
Cimarron/Comanche National Grassland
• Uinta/Wasatch/Cache National Forest
USDA FS Region 2
Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming
• Lighting Retrofits in all 11 Forests
(over 100 buildings)
• Water conservation in 10 Forests
(over 100 buildings)
• Renewable Power Generation in all 11
Forests (4 Photovoltaic Sites in Colorado
and 7 wind turbine sites in Colorado,
Wyoming & Nebraska)
• Biomass Heating in the Pagosa Springs &
San Juan National Forests (Colorado)
Energy andWater Conservation
The ESG – USDA Forest Service partnership
makes great strides towards achieving
the Region’s energy conservation and
renewable energy generation goals, and
has resulted in the following benefits:
• 10.35 % reduction in electricity
consumption
• 0.45 % reduction in natural gas
consumption
• 5.86% reduction of total energy
consumption
• 11.92 % reduction in water consumption
USDA FS Region 4
Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho
• Lighting conservation in 13 Forests
(over 100 buildings)
• Water conservation in 12 Forests
(over 100 buildings)
• Furnace and/or A/C upgrades in 10 Forests
(over 20 buildings)
• Biomass Heating in the Payette National
Forest (1 location)
• Infra-Red Heating in the Boise National
Forest (1 location)
Energy andWater Conservation
The ESG – USDA Forest Service partnership
makes great strides towards achieving
the Region’s energy conservation and
renewable energy generation goals, and
has resulted in the following benefits:
• 9.5 % reduction in power consumption
• 15.4% reduction in heating fuel
consumption
• 2.78 % reduction in water consumption
Renewable Energy
This project includes onsite renewable
energy generation that produces a
minimum of 295 Mega-watt hours of
Renewable Electricity.
